Keratoconus is a disease in which the cornea becomes progressively thinner and distorted. The initial symptom is blurred vision. As keratoconus progresses the cornea becomes too thin, resulting in painful episodes of redness and increased blurred vision.
The initial treatment involves custom made contact lenses based upon examination results. The contact lenses are designed to halt or slow the progression of keratoconus. Many people with keratoconus successfully wear specialty contact lenses which substantially improve vision for many years.
Sometimes keratoconus continues to progress regardless of specialty contacts, and surgical care is indicated. An opthalmologist specializing in keratoconus would recommend the proper surgery.
